In 1993, the old town of Baiona was declared a place of historical-artistic interest by the General Directorate of Historical Inheritance, coinciding with the celebration of the 5th. Centenary of the Arribada (marking the return of Columbus from the Americas).  Its protection is sealed in the General Plan of Urban Development and the Special Plan of Protection of the historical-artistic Association, that limits the height of the buildings and the quality of the materials used within this zone.

Although a part of the old town is located between Burgo (peninsula of Santa Marta) and Sabarís, the main nucleus is situated in the centre of the municipality and occupies a near full circle. It has three entrances:  from the square of Santa Liberata, in honour of Father Fernando and from the Cross of Trinidad. Their streets are narrow and paved, with stone or granite-made porch buildings, built at a low height. Every step there is a small shrine, fountain or a noblesman´s house. The air always has the scent of the sea.
